Delaware based Christian Music band SurRounSoun was known for their rock fusion and jazzy progressions. Then just last year it seems, they made an interesting move to link up with Christian Hip Hop legend (check his credentials if you don’t believe me) King Cyz. This sound be interesting, so I’m excited to hear what this molding of gospel music genres will produce sonically. The song is called “The Truth” and here is the review.
Let’s start with te beat, usually my favorite part. The sonic stylings of SurRounSoun, actually, I just need to call them The Few, don’t disappoint. They have a very rock based sound, and it’s less Hip Hop than most of the Christian rap that comes across the desk. It has synths, arpeggios and most importantly, live instrumentation. This makes the track super fluid and it blends from one section to the next effortlessly. This is some psychedelic stuff, and when you hear it, you will understand exactly what I mean.
Now comes the vocals. There is a slight balance issue between the chorus vocals (the singer) and the rapped vocals (King Cyz)….but beyond that, I’m really digging what I’m hearing. If you’ve never heard King Cyz rap, then let me just tell you that his voice is DEEP and commands presence when heard live, and that same commanding timbre comes through on this track. Lyrically King Cyz is a monster. He tackles several issues on the tracks and just like the beat, is fluid from one section to the next. His veteran status on the mic shines as his flow, presence and personality are 100% on point as well.
Now comes the one point that I do need to deduct a half point from. The mix. The mix is good for 99% of the song…but I don’t like the way the chorus is mixed. I wanted more vocals. The balance between the chorus and the verses really is a sticking point for me. If it were more balanced, it would’ve felt better. Also, the drums (especially the kick) get a little heavy towards the end of the song and create a pumping effect.
The song isn’t for download, and it isn’t for sale….but you can go listen! Click the picture and listen, then come back and drop some feedback.
